Last Friday, the 21st of November our class went to the Irish Military War Museum. The bus left at a quarter to ten full of excited children!
When we arrived in Collon, the location of the museum, we were broken into groups. Fifth class went upstairs to see a powerpoint presentation made by our tour guide, Neil. It was really fascinating and there were some great pictures. Stephen even got to dress as a German soldier and Luke as a British one. We also got to handle authentic World War 1 weaponry such as shrapnel, grenades and rifles.
After that we came downstairs and had our lunch. Yummy! We then watched fourth class go upstairs for the slideshow and my class walked into a room full of artifacts from the world wars that fourth class had been in before lunch. There was artillery, weapons and vehicles that were found in old battlefields on the Somme nearly a hundred years on. We also saw other artifacts such as medical equipment, medals and badges . It was very interesting . When we emerged from the room we had to put on our wellies and raincoats to go into a replica trench .
On our way out,Neil fired blanks from a rifles . It was deafening, but Neil said it would be twice as loud if there was a bullet in it. We then arrived at the trench and clambered in . It was filthy but we made our way around getting very dirty in the process ! It was such great fun . We got changed out of our bottoms and wellies and said goodbye to the tour-guides .
We all got back on the bus and had a sing-song on the way home . We arrived back at school at ten to three. It had been a great day!!!
